Pindari Glacier trek, one of U’khand’s popular adventure spots, to open on April 15 – ET TravelWorld

The Pindari Glacier trek in the Kumaon Himalayas is set to reopen on April 15, officially signalling the start of Uttarakhand’s summer trekking season. Located at an altitude of approximately 3,660m, the glacier is one of the most frequented trekking destinations in the state due to its moderate difficulty level, drawing both seasoned trekkers and first-timers.

The public works department has completed trail restoration from Khati to Zero Point to ensure a safer and smoother trekking experience. Adjacent route upgrades, including bridge reconstruction on the Sunderdhunga trail and repairs along the Kafni route, are also in progress.

The trek provides a crucial economic lifeline to local villages such as Khati, Wachham, and Jatoli, where around 250 residents are engaged as guides, porters, and homestay operators. In 2023, over 1,857 domestic and international visitors undertook the trek, and tourism officials expect a higher footfall this year.

Experienced trekkers like Bhuwan Chandra Chaubey endorse Pindari as one of the best Himalayan treks for beginners. He recommends starting the trek early in the morning to avoid weather complications and advises against wearing bright colours, which might attract wildlife and conflicts with local customs.

To ensure environmental safety and visitor accountability, the forest department has set up an eco-tourism checkpoint at Jaikuni. Registration is mandatory, with daily entry fees ranging from Rs 100 to Rs 225 based on nationality and student status. Additional charges apply for tents, animals, and other services.

District tourism officer P K Gautam said that accommodation facilities across key halting points — Loharkhet, Dhakuri, Khati, Dwali, and Phurkiya — are ready to receive guests. Homestay owners have been instructed to maintain fair pricing, and regular inspections will be conducted to ensure quality services and trail upkeep.
